Meghalaya’s Living Root Bridges Find A Spot In Unesco’s Tentative List

Known for its extensive cave system and its unique living root bridges, Meghalaya is a traveller’s paradise. The state has once again been put on a global map with the inclusion of the living roots in the tentative list of Unesco’s World Heritage Sites.

The announcement was made by Meghalaya’s Chief Minister — Conrad K Sangma — on Twitter. “The living root bridges not only stand out for their exemplary human-environment symbiotic relationship but also focus on their pioneering use for connectivity and resilience, and the need to adopt sustainable measures to balance economy and ecology,” he said.
Often used as a path across a stream or a river, the bridges famous in Meghalaya are found in many villages — currently about 100 bridges spread across nearly 70 villages. These bridges are built by the local tribal communities and take a few years before they are fully strengthened and ready for use.

More common in the southern part of Meghalaya, one needs to trek to the exact site in order to see and access the bridges. One of the most famous living root bridge is in Nongriat, which is a double decker living root bridge and is spread across two levels.

The study released on Wednesday by TRAFFIC - a leading non-governmental organisation working globally on trade in wild animals and plants in the context of both biodiversity conservation and sustainable development--found that traffickers are exploiting the growth of the aviation sector to move illegal wildlife products across India and its international borders.

Carelessness, lack of prompt action behind regular forest fires in Purulia: W. Bengal

A fire has engulfed a vast expanse of forest area in West Bengal's Purulia district since March 24, 2022, according to officials of the forest department. The blaze has spread rapidly in the forested areas of Joychandi, Garpanchakot, Bandoan, Baranti and Ayodhya hills, they added. Some of these areas are in the reserved forest category.

Forest fires in the region are not new — they were recorded in the months between spring and summer the last few years as well. In these months, a heatwave sweeps the entire district, said experts. The regular forest fires have become a threat to the ecological system and environment of Purulia, they added.

Sheer negligence, ignorance in the community about this disaster and lack of strong measures by the state’s forest department to control the fire immediately are the main reasons for the fires, according to members of the community as well as environmental and tribal rights activists.
